The Pre-Mining Checklist

Before diving into the world of mining, a few critical steps must be taken to ensure smooth operations. Let's take the MSI Z270-A PRO motherboard as an example:

Step 1: Update BIOS

MSI has addressed the issue of PCIe device recognition with dedicated BIOS solutions for the mentioned motherboards. Here's how to do it:

  1. Download the BIOS version E7A71IMS.120, specifically designed to support bitcoin/ethereum mining.
  2. Copy the BIOS file to the root folder of a USB pen drive.
  3. Connect the USB pen drive to a USB port on the motherboard.
  4. Start the system and enter BIOS.
  5. Choose M-Flash and select "Yes" to initiate the BIOS flash.
  6. The system will reboot and enter the M-Flash user interface. Locate the USB pen drive on the left panel, select it, and the BIOS file (E7A71IMS.120) will appear on the right panel.
  7. Choose E7A71IMS.120 and click "Yes" to start the BIOS flash.

Step 2: System Installation

After successfully updating the BIOS, boot up the system using CPU integrated graphics, without adding any discrete graphics cards. Opt for Windows 10 Professional 64-bit as your preferred OS and install all relevant motherboard drivers post-OS installation.

Step 3: Graphics Card Driver Installation

Under BIOS setup, navigate to Settings > Advanced > Integrated Graphics Configuration > Initiate Graphic Adapter and set it to IGD. Following this, turn off the machine and connect just one graphics card. However, refrain from inserting the discrete graphics card directly into the PCIe slot on the motherboard. Instead, use a mining adapter (e.g., x1 to x16 PCIe adapter) as an intermediary between the motherboard and the external graphics card.

Now, proceed to boot into the OS and install the latest driver for the graphics card. You should find both integrated and discrete graphics recognized in the device manager without any exclamation marks under display adapters.

Step 4: Fine-Tuning for Mining

Once both integrated and discrete graphics cards are correctly recognized, right-click on the desktop icon and select "Power Options." Disable "fast startup."

Reboot and enter BIOS setup again. Navigate to Settings > Advanced > PCI Subsystem Settings > Above 4G memory/Crypto Currency Mining and set it to "Enabled."

  1. Save the BIOS settings and shut down the system.
  2. Add the remaining 5 graphics cards to the motherboard one by one.

It's worth noting that adding the graphics cards incrementally helps avoid potential delays during system boot-up, preventing a black screen that could mislead users into thinking the system cannot start.
